Architectural solutions of Tervaskangas Mall focus on commerciality and different looks based on the time of day/season

Innovarch Oy, a Vahanen Group company, is in charge of the architectural design of Tervaskangas Mall in Kouvola. The mall project is one of leading Finnish trading sector company Kesko Group’s most major single retail trade investments. The project value is around 100 million euro.
The two-storey mall will offer 48,000 square metres of sales facilities and around 90 stores. The key stores of the mall will be Kesko Group’s Citymarket, Anttila and K-Rauta. Once completed in autumn 2012, the mall will employ around 1,000 people. The building design starting points were energy-efficiency and renovation flexibility during use. Some of the energy for the mall will be produced with a ground heat system. A Breeam environmental certificate will be applied for the building.
- The mall will be located at an intersection of heavily trafficked highway no. 6 and Kuusaantie road. Key architectural features include an exterior face lining separated from the building frame that will make the shape of the building clearly discernible. The colourful exterior face will stress the site’s commercial nature. This implementation method enables changing the appearance of the mall as the seasons and times of day change by means of lighting, for example, says architect Harri Nikulainen of Innovarch Oy.
According to Nikulainen, gallery corridors that will combine the different stores in the mall will include the same architectural features as the exterior face: plenty of colours, open space and varying materials.
- The building will be fairly closed, and there will be glass surfaces mainly in the galleries. In addition to unrestricted moving, orientation and navigation are important themes when designing a mall. By lighting the galleries, we want to support the business of the future tenants of the mall, Nikulainen explains. Clear commercial visibility both on the highway and the Kuusaantie road, a road connecting Kuusankoski to Kouvola, is important: a forty-metre advertisement tower will ensure this.

Helsingin Musiikkitalo music hall selected as best construction site in 2010,
Ring Road I selected as best infrastructure construction site of the year

Musiikkitalo was awarded because of SRV’s successful construction site management and textbook-like production management in a construction project that is highly significant on the Finnish scale. Vahanen Group’s role in its design was important because of the extent and pressing schedule of construction stage modifications.
Ring Road I construction site was named the infrastructure construction site of the year because of successful construction site management and excellent traffic arrangements. YIT was the contractor for the Ring Road I site, and Vahanen Group company Fundatec Oy was in charge of the design of a rock tunnel.
Rakennuslehti magazine has awarded the best construction site in Finland since 1986. The most important criteria of Rakennuslehti when selecting the sites include compliance with schedules and cost/quality objectives, safety at work, demanding nature of the site, site management and development work at the site that promotes the construction industry as a whole.

Skanssi Mall aims for LEED certification for Existing Buildings

Skanssi Mall in Turku will apply for LEED (Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design) Certification for Existing Buildings. Vahanen Group is the consultant in the eighteen-month project. During the project period, the means available for the mall to achieve the LEED certification criteria will be studied and the mall will be assisted in changes related to property management and use. An application for the certification will be submitted after a monitoring period.
Environmental Expert Anne-Maria Vierinen of Vahanen Group says that LEED for Existing Buildings is a means to prove that environmental viewpoints are taken into account in the maintenance and use of the property.
-
Green design and construction is not enough: you must also do the right things during the use of the property to achieve genuine energy savings.
Managing Director Liisa Nikkanen of Skanssi Mall sees many advantages in LEED for Existing Buildings.
-
We want to be known as a green mall, and LEED supports this target. The certification can also increase the value of a property - quality certificates such as LEED are absolutely necessary for properties.
According to Nikkanen, LEED certification is also useful in practice because it will keep maintenance costs reasonable and improve the property’s energy-efficiency.
Skanssi Mall was awarded LEED for New Construction Certification in 2009. Skanssi plans to be the first Finnish mall with both LEED for New Construction and LEED for Existing Buildings Certification.

Sustainable construction solutions and school architecture of Vahanen Group presented in Abu Dhabi
Smart Green Building seminar arranged by an export ring managed by Vahanen Group focused on sustainable construction technologies. Vahanen Group took the opportunity to present its school architecture in the seminar. The architectural solutions may answer school construction challenges in the Abu Dhabi region. The average age of people in the Middle East is low, and thus a large number of new schools are needed. Topics in sustainable construction included a water shortage threatening the region and energy saving objectives.
- The main objective with our school architecture is designing and furnishing schools that comply with the challenges inherent to pedagogy. The needs and wishes of the future tenants and local authorities are always taken into account, and these continuously change as the world changes, says architect Jani Ristimäki of Eduarch Oy.
The series of sustainable construction seminars by Vahanen Group will continue in Qatar in 2011.

We planted 3,000 trees
In 2010, Vahanen Group organised a Plant a Tree campaign and donated a total of 3,000 trees to developing countries. The Plant a Tree campaign was arranged in cooperation with Finnish Church Aid’s Alternative Gifts campaign.
Finnish Church Aid manages the planting of trees in areas where forests have been cut down to get firewood, or where forests have been eradicated by floods or erosion. It is possible to restore the balance of nature by planting new trees. Trees will also provide new livelihood for the local inhabitants in the form of fruits, for example. If the plan is to plant a commercial forest, tree species that grow fast are selected so that the local people will benefit from the forestry as soon as possible.
The Plant a Tree campaign has been highly visible in Vahanen Group’s customer events and at trade fairs. We have also donated trees as business gifts or as thanks for our valuable customers.
