Vahanen expands its services into piping system condition inspections

Vahanen is expanding its service range and will also implement piping system condition inspections in the future. Through inspection work, the status and remaining operating life of real estate thermal, water and drain systems are clarified. At the same time, a long-term maintenance plan is formulated for the next 10 years.
"Piping system condition inspection represents a good tool for the real estate owner in the management of building technology and for forecasting repairs to the heating, water and drain systems," says Product Manager Jouko Savela, starting at Vahanen in January. The repair requirement is large as real estate stock ages, and this is also seen in the growing demand for condition inspections. Vahanen is responding on its part to this demand by launching this new service.

Winter Garden restoration:
special structural solutions and plant protection a challenge

Helsinki's Winter Garden, originally built in 1893, contains over 200 different sorts of plants and a carp pool. In addition to welcoming visitors, private functions are also arranged in the garden. The Winter Garden has been renovated as regular intervals, and the most recent repair project was launched two years ago with condition inspections ordered from Vahanen. Now the project has advanced to the design stage. The restoration shall be completed in 2011.
"Some of the Winter Garden wood and steel structures are in poor shape and we've constructed some temporary supports for them. The most challenging thing in the project is the building's special structural solutions - the steel frame dimensions consisting of a double profile vary, and only part of the drawings were available," relates Arto Roine from Vahahen, who works as project manager.
The previous restoration was completed about 30 years ago. "The type of use for these premises is a challenge of its own for the preservation of its structures. This sort of building, where it rains indoors and out, must be restored more often," Mr Roine points out.
"The Winter Garden repair project is an unusual kind of job which doesn't come up very often. Even the designers have had new matters to deal with, because what's involved is not just the age of the building and its special structures but plant and flower protection issues as well," explains Building Manager Ari Lyytikäinen from Helsinki Public Works Department.
According to Mr Lyytikäinen, the project has progressed smoothly. "We haven't even tried to modernize the old glass structures. In our view, the operations in new structures for similar facilities don't yet meet a standard that's good enough to switch over to them," Mr Lyytikäinen declares.
The Winter Garden is officially protected, and the City Museum is involved with the project to monitor the realization of the restoration repair principle. According to Roine, cooperation with the City Museum has proceeded well: "Our perspectives on the repair work have followed quite the same lines, and in some matters there's been a little compromise back and forth. In connection with the project, there's also been an effort to improve the usability of the Winter Garden, so for this purpose it's necessary to bring new building technology into the structure, for instance." The architectural planning for the Winter Garden has been completed by Jaakko Haapanen from the architectural department of Helsinki Public Works Department.

Plenty to still repair in Romania -
Vahanen has the aim to expand local services

At Instapro s.r.l., Vahanen's centre in Bucharest, highly demanding building engineering planning is going on. "All sites are being made with 3D-modelling," relates Managing Director Atte Perttu. "Our goal is to get involved in Romania with underground construction and Design & Build construction. A lot of basic quality community building projects are coming to the market, such as railways, schools, hospitals and waste water treatment facilities.
According to Perttu, Romania's building stock has hardly been renovated during the last 50 years: "Romania has an acute need for repair to its building stock - the repairs to valuable buildings are the first which have been launched during the last five years." Vahanen's goal is to offer overall services in design, renovative construction and real estate management to the local market, in cooperation with local operators in the field.

Vahanen introduces new JulkisivuPlus service - acquaint yourself with the online information package!

Vahanen expanded its Plus service family by launching the JulkisivuPlus service model on 2 December 2009. Energy efficiency - in which good opportunities for improvement are offered through façade renovation - is also in a pivotal role. For example, thermal consumption can be affected by the repair of external walls, the roof and windows.
During the period of the JulkisivuPlus projects, a specific home page is being opened to Vahanen's Avain service, where you can also find a comprehensive information package of façade repair projects. Get acquainted with Avain at http://avain.vahanen.com (ID: asukas, password: demo).
Have a look at a video telling about the service as well (in Finnish).

Vahanen plants trees in Nepal and Peru in cooperation with the Finnish Church foreign aid programme

Vahanen began to take part in voluntary tree-planting activities in November as part of the Plant a Tree campaign. With the campaign, we are battling against climate change in areas where forests have been hacked into firewood or have otherwise declined from erosion. By planting trees, the balance of nature can be restored. Tree-planting is the responsibility of the Different Kind of Gift appeal coordinated by the Finnish Church foreign aid programme. Up to this point, we have already planted over 200 trees.
The Plant a Tree campaign will continue in 2010. For each service order made to Vahanen, ten trees will be planted on behalf of the customer in either West Nepal or Peru. In addition, the campaign will be seen in Vahanen's events and trade fair booths.
